1. INTRO

hello, dear subscriber to the no type mailout!

you may have left your email address on our website (i.e. www.notype.com) some while ago, or you may have been a long time observer of the no type case, expecting us to inform you on a somewhat regular basis as of what was up with us. but alas, no news in such a long while! what's wrong with us weirdos?

2. NEW RELEASES

if you wonder why there has not been much new odors emanating from the no type recycling bin in a long while, well, it meant that were busy pulling all the little strings of our impossible theatre so as to get ready for the next round. & what a round it is. man, there is so much good music coming out. we have got to be kidding.

MONTRÉAL FREE 4CD (IMNT 0306/09)
first, we must announce that in a bout of ineluctable megalomania, we have released a 4 CD box set. it's called Montréal Free & it features the best of the free improv scene in this city i called home a little over 4 years ago. no other label would have done this. we are the only posse certifiably insane enough to let such an intensely liberating package grace the face of the earth. this is not a compilation. it's a box set containing 4 different CDs by 4 different groups: playing this in any environment will give you the equivalent of spending some time at our fine free improv venues with beer in hand & other people's smoke in your lungs, more or less. this is not new york, this is not chicago, this is montréal. we're not being patriotic here, we're just stating the facts. & speaking of all this, we should suggest that you check out Sam Shalabi's new CD osama on alien8 recordings. as for montréal free (three quarters of which features the aforementioned's guitar talents) you can order it direct from electrocd.com (as always, your worldwide provider of no type music).

COIN GUTTER: All your dreams are meaningless CD (IMNT 0310)
pre-launched at the rien à voir festival this march, Coin Gutter's first bona fide CD All your dreams are meaningless is now available for online ordering, a few weeks before the official street date. coin gutter are 2 folks from vancouver who get away with a lot of unfashionable things to do in experimental electronics, like "working with movements rather than variations", or "not thinking of your music in terms of aural wallpaper." their music is awesome in the best sense of the word. it is visionary, futuristic & highly critical of itself. & it lends itself to building moving epics & glacier landscapes out of rude bits of sound. if there is such a thing as a new canadian sound to electronic music, then this is dangerously beginning to sound like it.

A_DONTIGNY & DIANE LABROSSE: Télépathie CD (IMNT 081)
meticulous computerist A_dontigny (Napalm Jazz, morceaux_de_machines) meets up with sampler goddess Diane Labrosse (wondeur brass, parasites & many more bands & projects inbetween) for a night of electronic improv to behold. it happened on that moment & fortunately we were there to record it. it's very romantic, you might say. but not in a cheesy way, incredibly enough. it might be worthwhile, when listening to this disc, to remember that the two had never played before, save perhaps for the soundcheck that preceded this concert. to say that they were made to play with each other will feel like the utmost oxymoron once you have heard the results.

3. A LOOK AT OUR FORTHCOMING RELEASES

yikes! what does that say of our treasure trove of MP3 releases, free for the taking, no strings attached, & such forth? can we hear new material, or is everyone going mute? regarding this i must hope for your pardon, as i did not spend very much time indeed on this god damn site. argh. that said, there is no lack of music, & that is no incredible thing, as this is how things have always been around here: heavily productive crew, notoriously slow webmaster. ack!@# so, a few words, here's a little look at what to expect in the coming months...

CAL CRAWFORD, DAVID TURGEON, JON VAUGHN: every so often or traces thereof (NT 072)
recorded in 2001, the sole meeting to date of this trio. three complementary solutions to the same problem: when to stop? 2 computers, 3 no-input mixing boards. you are not supposed to improvise like this. beware your ears.

SINE FICTION (featuring julie rousse): vol.IV) foundation (NT 073)
our popular sine fiction series continues with Julie Rousse (also of the duo komsomolsk with napalm jazz's Philémon) who provides here a fitting soundtrack to isaac asimov's classic series of novels.

KANOVANIK: kanovanik EP (NT 074)
finally available online, Kanovanik's patented slow motioned melancholic rock! 4 pieces with vocals, including covers of the teddy bears & neu! catchy, cosy, & somewhat creepy stuff.

N.KRA: bits and pieces (NT 075)
new york's nicholas krapels works with small measures: small sounds & small structures. when his tracks last more than 2 minutes, it's because they ought to. what he does is deceptively simple, in that it works, although it shouldn't!

CLICK TRACY: warren beatty (NT 076)
mr. todd books is always an active part of our posse, though there has been only one no type release from him so far (The Highly Illogical EP, if you remember; but see below for more.) this is his homage to free jazz.

MARTINDX & ELASTICLEGO: bipolar transmission (NT 077)
an unforeseen collaboration from all across the big pond: Martindx (aka martin dixon) from london & Elasticlego (aka Headphone Science, aka dustin craig) from oakland, sharing sound bites together & coming up with this dubbish programming mesh! watch out for the incredible "fat old sun"...

but there is more... in the form of, yikes, actual media. all three of them.

BOOKS ON TAPE: hey typical! (blue 10") (IMNT 078)
vinyl! can it be so? well, yes, & to inaugurate this new antihistorical step, who better than north hollywood's own Books on Tape, master of samplers? funky, sultry, weird... you can't go wrong.

CLAUDIA BONARELLI: may '68 (clear 10") (IMNT 079)
the return of sweden's Claudia Bonarelli, this time on clear wax... what can we say, it's some damn fine vacuum cleaner style dubby beats, very deep, very clicky, very groovy & very much a friend of your ears.

HEADPHONE SCIENCE: we remain faded CD (IMNT 080)
finally, the mini-LP of fat beats, cool strings & hashed up hip-hop samples you've been waiting for! probably dustin craig's most consistently solid offering heard so far--this kid is getting better by every release! of course it sounds lovely.

note that headphone science's CD is packaged in a light, elegant all-colour folded cardboard sleeve (following the same format as our 'regular' releases, only thinner), & that the 10"s come in a simple transparent polybag for your protection & convenience.

& there are quite a few more singles planned for web release throughout 2003... but all of the above will be available in the next 2 months or so, some sooner than others. :)

4. NO TYPE AT MUTEK

it's official. thursday 29 may 2003, as part of the fourth edition of montréal's own festival of electronic sound, aka mutek, there will be a sort of no type showcase, featuring choice units from our canadian line-up:

A_dontigny + Diane Labrosse
morceaux_de_machines
samiland
Coin Gutter

yow, will this rock the house or not! more details shortly, you bet. but in the meantime, the following URL will also reveal a new MP3 compilation from canadian artists, featuring yours truly, aka camp, & a nice little unreleased track:

http://www.mutek.ca/

5. BOOKS ON TAPE ON TOP OF THE CHARTS

after doing very well on CMJ's BPM charts, further confirmation that Books on Tape is the man of the moment came from canada's !earshot, which compiles charts from radios all across the country & ranked Throw Down Your Laptops (released last december on seattle-based label deathomb arc) on the top of its own electronica chart. yep folks, that means #1, no less. now, whatever these statistics might mean in reality is left as an exercise to the reader, but we feel that this says something of the natural sympathy of college radio towards todd's oeuvre. & who are we to dismiss that? note that if you still don't own this great CD, you can always order it from home (i.e. electrocd.com) at the following url:

http://www.electrocd.com/cat.e/dba_11.html

6. I'M SURE THERE WAS SOMETHING ELSE

anyway, that's it for now. there will be more. in fact, there will be more not just from no type, but also from its numerous affiliated labels. you see, since km krebs (alias 833-45, alias the lucky new father of a lovely baby girl, send out your congratulations to kevin m krebs) started his nishi sublabel (URL below), more projects have begun sprouting up! Eucci has just started his own, called rive, continuing his previous rivcs cassette label (again, URL follows). A_dontigny is about to invent a sine fiction zone so as to escape no type's impossibly stringent release schedule. & Jon Vaughn & carrie gates are hard at work on their own thing, saskatoon-style. this is not even taking into account todd drootin's ever-loquacious subverseco label. okay, so here's that bunch of URLs.

http://www.notype.com/nishi/
http://www.notype.com/rive/
http://www.subverseco.com/

there is still a lot to come, & i hope to be communicating more often now that this mailing list is finally back on the rails. in the meantime, keep checking out notype.com & electrocd.com for updates, that's where it happens & such forth. you even get a free catalogue when you order from us. we're nearly running out, so act fast!

ayight, enough of me & my damn label--now what have you been up to?
