this week: electroacoustics + glitches

27 juin 2001

hence doom found our home: for a few weeks we had to be disconnected from the internet & lose our only link to the outside world. a cyberwar was declared, for reasons just as fallacious as any other war; however, we can say this one made no victims. unless you're the impatient kind, of course. (yes, i am indeed talking of the cracker attack which shut us down for a few weeks. all that needed to be said about it has been said. we're back in the virtual world now anyway!)

to top it off, the headquarters of no type are now moving (again!) as i will establish myself to a new address in montréal. this means that effective june 29, your correspondance (i guess that means demos) must now go to:

no type covert audio operations
4863 hôtel de ville
montréal (québec)
canada H2T 2B5

our contact page has been changed to reflect this. so, back from this forced inexposure (pardon the pun), we may now return to our normal activity, which is (when i'm not busy serving the new economy as a day job) releasing music! so without further ado, here's it coming.

051 || THEMOONSTEALINGPROJECT || Ha!
oh, there were plenty who wondered on & on as to when they could hear some more of jason urick's forbiddingly soothing soundpieces. well, dear friends, now is the time. ha! is themoonstealingproject's second album for no type & it has everything one could wish for, whether it is arresting melody or somptuous texture. no beats, though, but certainly rhythm, & some good noise too. the four pieces contained therein are somewhat longer than the ones found on msp.003/nt[ep]fkm [024], which gives us listeners more time to get acquainted with them; not that they're any less lovely...

052 || A_DONTIGNY/D_TURGEON/K_WONG || Matin du Nevada
sometime last year, kaia wong visited the (aforementioned) no type headquarters for a few days after a long trip throughout the USA & ontario which included a long stint at the burning man event in nevada. comically, she told us about it uninterrupted, as if in one long talk bubble, & then stopped suddenly when there was nothing left to mention. later on we jammed & this is what happened. as with anything kaia touches (in this case, a korg keyboard), it's full of lyrism & thoughtful playing. as with anything aimé touches, one will find throughly exacting ruckus all over the place. & as with everything i touch, the results still manage to sound inexplicably sloppy. this is the kind of microvising professional microvisers will usually want to avoid. but who are we to dismiss it?

053 || TRANSIENT || Transient
long, long ago, (like two years) a swedish folk who goes by the name leonard krylov had a page full of his MP3s, with descriptions that went like "nobody's going to get it, but there you go". of course, the music was fantastic & when i learned that he was taking down his site, i couldn't resist contacting him for a release on no type. & so he eventually sent me six new pieces for inclusion on the site, telling me he wasn't doing much music work anymore now that he was working in game development. for some reason, the tracks remained on my hard drive for over a year, as i was awaiting some directions as to artwork or even song order. then one day, i figured what the hell, so here they are. if you like them, send leonard an email. personally this is the most appealing electroacoustic music i've heard from someone not already making records, let's see how it fares for you!

833-45, BOOKS ON TAPE, EUCCI: NEW LIVE RECORDINGS |
to inaugurate the now revamped "live" section (now with less obsolete announcements & more actual live recordings) here are three notypers who recently played gigs & even went so far as to record them! what can i say, that's the digital revolution in full force, now we composers can create & engineer our own music on computers, & we can even produce bootleg recordings of it at our own leisure! joking apart, the 3 recordings now featured are from 833-45, who performed at video in studios (vancouver) last february, from eucci, taken from his performance at this year's once.twice festival of sound in baltimore, & finally from books on tape, who played his special brand of electronic funk alongside a flurry of straight edge hardcore bands at the orlando magic fest just earlier this month.

BOOKS ON TAPE IN THE HOUSE: CROWDPLEASER |
there is no rest in sight for todd drootin, aka books on tape. a follow-up to The Highly Illogical EP [046] & every bit as good, the brand new 7-track EP crowdpleaser has just been posted on subverseco's site, & it's not just for crowds; it's for you, too! todd is now organizing a special remix extravaganza which will eventually end up on no type. you will be informed, as i'm sure you expect.

EUCCI CHILLS OUT: SUMMER SINGLE |
no sooner is one done checking out eucci's music that new tracks are appearing on the web. could it mean... another seasonal single? yes, sir (or madam). eucci's summer single is now available from his euc.cx website, deleting the previous (winter) single & so on, etc. one of these days someone will have to get jeffrey a record contract to release these things permanently, but in the meantime, there you go.

DICK RICHARDS GETS SIGNED |
woops! we don't know what it is with toronto (the water maybe?) that produces so many minimal house wizards, but as soon as we get our hands on one of them, they get signed! dick richards, following his Incongruence Signal [043] album, got picked up by raum records from germany, a label specializing in all the things that gets you grooving in the morning (like 4 am), who will essentially release all 5 no type songs plus many more unreleased tracks. but so what, we shall hear more from dick richards on no type as he has already uploaded a new album, under the name "ramon llull". that's coming soon... sorta.

CLONK SAYS GOODBYE |
speaking of which, last weekend, dick richards was playing alongside sutekh & naw, which was, sadly, the closing edition of clonk, this kinda-monthly night of crazy techno beats. neil weirnik (naw) has been organizing the event with his friend greg (ether mann) for some time now, & i can say they were excellent hosts who have been absolutely friendly & helpful when they invited us to play last may. (neil & greg is still playing around toronto though, so check out your local listings.)

... BUT TOMAS JIRKU REMAINS (DARN!) |
tomas jirku's classic epic _immaterial_ [6012, deleted] has just been reissued on CD by substractif (new alien8 sublabel) in a rather different form: four long reprocessed pieces instead of ten. but hey, it works. tomas is also coming back from mutek, where he played this year again. yet he still finds the time to work on side projects, one of which he will be releasing on no type in the very near future! it's called gi joe killaz & it's just what it says.

UPCOMING LIVE EVENTS |

electronic music festival, blinding light cinema, vancouver (BC)

NEXT UPDATE |
the next update will be a particularly special time because all three of our protagonists are (a) superstars; (b) people with multiple personalities; & (c) acts whose first letter is (ironically) I! would you believe it? idmonster is someone whose music can be found on monotonik (as "pendle") & who makes nice crunchy laid back beats (& what's wrong with that?) infoslut is net.art punk star eryk salvaggio, who has decided to get rid of the "matrix assimilation" moniker once & for all, & so be it if that means being confusing. we know you will understand. as for illusion of safety, it is simply dan burke, who makes the original concrète ambient music from hell. he has no split personality that i know of but he did hang out with jim o'rourke.

THOUGHT |
actually, there's no thought this week. it's too hot for thinking. speaking of which, what are you doing inside anyway?!

the free music is back!

WE NOW RETURN TO OUR PROGRAM >>

it's been a mess, but we're back online.

as you may recall, the server no type sits on has been struck by an attack from chinese crackers, retaliating against a similar attack by their equally clueless U.S. counterparts. the initial U.S. strike was done following the april 1st "spy plane" affair. chinese attacks were done much later, & are said to have hit only 1000 servers.

so thank you, now we know that paranoid xenophobia is still going strong in the U.S. (that explains how junior got into office). likewise, we now realize that people who should know better, waste their time attacking sites which have nothing to do with their cause.

it took a while to get back online, but we must thank our admin, brander, for taking time off his finals to help the matter & reconfigure his server using a new operating system & so forth, meaning we should now be less vulnerable to such attacks in the future.

but hey, that's it now. the site is back up. the music is available again. maybe you'll see a weird thing or two along the way. if so, please inform us!

for now, go to http://www.notype.com & enjoy our recent releases by kanito, morceaux_de_machines & zammuto!

thank you for your patience, & take care.
