intro >> so this is the last no type update before christmas, & what have you done? no need to answer; we know you've all been good kids who downloaded quality music from us all year & will continue to do so for as long as we keep doing this! & then you tell your friends: "you know, if only the cds i bought were as good as what i find on that site..." after which you deliver the correct url (no hyphen between no & type, & yes it's a dot com, shame!) so that they too can revel in the magic of music that happens to be free of charge & extremely easy to find while at the same time providing the most beautiful sounds to heal your ears from so much ugly radio noise. that is essentially our marketing scheme for next year. sure it's minimalistic, but how could _that_ fail in this _era_?!

038: stackoverflow >>
we hadn't heard of _stackoverflow_ in over a year. he made his Transfer Interrupted! album [9002] & then he sort of vanished. repeated attempts to reach him by phone failed until it was known he had been trainspotting to the nevada desert, where he experienced enlightement, took up two wives & spent time smoked peyotl with the inhabitants while discussing of mystical matter. then out of the blue, his friend eryk salvaggio received a package from him, consisting of an abstract painting & a minidisc recording. of course both are highly bizarre & we couldn't resist turning them into a single, Rubitcow [038]. further attempts to clarify his situation resulted in vague answers & obnoxious laughter, but he is now believed to have clandestinely fled to a yet-unknown island in the pacific ocean with his wives & a stack of mescal & booze. ah, the life of an experimental music star...

039: thin >>
as for _thin_, he also came back, though from an even more dreadful place, that of "musicians with too much sidework & no time for making new music". announcing he was working on a new full-length (to follow his wonderful opus Snap-on Grooves [6013]), he decided to drop by with 4 tracks which should have been released long ago, but who are we to keep old music from being released now when it's so good? with this long-awaited single, Moody Hat [039], thin continues to show his knack for absolutely pristine production. the overall feel is now that of jazz, mixed with drum n bass grooves, & those good old trip-hop breaks that no one else has been using properly in the past 2 years. mix that with a taste for tunes that are sweet yet do not promote tooth decay, & a general sense of the twisted (well, he's on no type, isn't he?). in a perfect world, some would be fighting to offer him a record contract, but the only people with such taste are discriminating listeners like you, who are usually not record execs.

040: 833-45 >>
k.m. krebs, aka _833-45_, has been consistently delivering beautiful music ever since his early tracking days, & up to his recent split ep with _tomas jirku_ [025]. now with an upcoming 7" on kultbox records from chicago, as well as an appearance on the co-records compilation, it is about time some people begin to recognize what a talented composer he is. as is to be expected, his music is made of natural phenomenae & shortwave receptions, but he actually builds something new & exciting out of those things. on Sunspot [040], he pushes his technique boldly forward, creating even more abstract atonal structures & an overall clearer sound, trading the messiness for edgier rhythms. it's not just like tapping the phone line; it's like _being_ the phone line. with short interstices to give a conceptual feeling to the whole thing, this is a short but seriously wild album, one of those singular experiences nobody but 833-45 is able to achieve.

surprise, a cd >> it's official enough, so we're letting the word out at last. after two failed attempts, no type is _finally_ putting out its very own compilation cd, entitled _the freest of the radicals_. this extremely exciting item will include recent, exclusive tracks from various no type luminaries both veterans & rookies. it will be the only ever cd to be released by no type (unless you count those 20 cd-r copies of _immaterial_ to be a "release"...). profits from it will go to future no type endeavours, which may or may not include: 1) putting up shows; 2) sending out promotional material to magazines; 3) advertising (but no spam); 4) buying out mp3.com (or a new hard drive); 5) continuing our quest to piss off the music industry by our sheer presence (okay, that doesn't cost anything, but we'll be happy to receive your support, too.) oh, & i better not see any of those tracks on napster!

eucci, winter special >> continuing the tradition of seasonal singles offered exclusively on his website euc.cx, eucci is now offering two unreleased pieces from his repertoire as his _winter special_. it's a bit of a look back to the audio e.l.w. days, recorded in a hotel room. of course that means the _fall special_ is now unavailable. what does that say about this one? two words: go! now!

infoslut >> on no type, eryk salvaggio is _matrix assimilation_ (& sometimes he is also _influenza_). but elsewhere, he is _infoslut_ & he's got quite a lot of music posted under that umbrella, both as mp3 files & as "dam cd"s from mp3.com. he claims it's not worth talking about, so i had to _force this information out of him_! imagine the face of your ceo (or economy teacher) as s/he opens a copy of _songs for the watergun revolution, vol.1_! (yes!! it's that "gift idea that may get you in trouble" feeling we're all craving for!!! your friends would love it, though.)

my holidays rant >> it's almost "the holidays". thus it's (assumedly) time to think about deities, morals, & "spirituality" in general. so ask yourself: what do i really want? what do i really care for? paper idols? television? internet startups? church? intolerance? barbaric finance? stupid music? where's your real god, the one you _want_? well, it's nowhere, because god doesn't exist & shouldn't be talked of anyway (even a theologian will tell you that.) so in essence you're just following a lifestyle which coincidentally includes a short, stressful "break" during the turn of the year. the result is that everybody in the western world more or less "celebrates the holidays", throwing in a little (or big) bit of an aftertaste of religiosity somewhere in the process. all in all it's supposed to be a feisty season, full of joys & happy things, "a child is born" & so on. thus we want to make other people happy by buying them things. but what if you're broke around christmas? what if you have no nearby friends or family? what if you're too busy, or have to work extra hours in a shopping mall to accomodate the needs of compulsive consumers who just _had_ to wait until the _absolute last minute_ before getting gifts they don't even care to give? what if you simply don't feel like it? the uniqueness of "the holidays" makes no sense. why aren't there more of those? why isn't it optional? you can make anybody happy at any time of the year, why not have your own personal holidays anytime you want? why maintain the status quo when you know that there is no grounds for this? the reason of course lies in the marketing department of large transnational corporations, but don't tell them that, they'll say they're just doing what you want.

upcoming >> if this week was a veteran's special, then the next update (which will happen sometime after the new year) will be 100% rookie. it will also be more consistent soundwise somewhat (why? that matters?), with an emphasis on minimalist composition, but viewed from three divergent perspectives. _le chien borgne_ makes his no type debut with _23_50-lr¬n_ [041], six uncomprising & unpronounceable pieces of near silence. next up will be _elasticlego_'s no type single _blurred memories of a static child_ [042], endearing ambient noise featuring the first instance of an "album within an album" on this site. you'll see. last & not least is _dick richards_' _incongruence signal_ [043], which is some of the most infectious minimal house i've heard all year. all of it is essential listening by tomorrow's standards, so don't wait for us to quote deleuze before you discover this fantastic new music.

thought >> no type: there will be no boxing day specials.

intro >> for the holiday season, this newscast will feature the requisite holiday advertisements, enquiring you to consume with more fervour & ask less questions.

requisite holiday advertisement >> the holiday season approaches & we want you to make the gift of unlimited music to all your friends. really. you could send them the url to this site, & the thousand or so minutes of music that we so graciously offer! their music collection will never be the same: off with all those limp bizkit mp3s they hear all day long anyway, here is their tap into pure, unadultered no type music. an overwhelming experience that they will never forget. what more could anyone in their sane mind ask for?

035: viratone ballad >>
debuting this week on no type, _viratone ballad_ is the elusive project of _multsanta_, noted (mad) scientist of the sound thing with a few limited releases of his own & on various compilations. his new ep, Sideworm [035] is solid state toaster noise at its finest: ever-evolving, narrative crackles & bursts, anti-tones, & not very much time for boredom. these tracks were created from simple sound sources (_clef_ was made entirely of _wyclef jean_ samples), & yet resound far beyond the usual spectrum.

036: oeuf korreckt >>
but then there are those who ask: "where's the beats?" & here they are. _oeuf korreckt_ is back from a hiatus of over a year, & the results are absolute vintage oeuf. Shibuya Without End [036] is his fourth no type release; it is comprised of a piece (_shibuya_) in three parts, an additional breakbeat shocker (featuring a japanese girl repeating something that sounds like "napalm"), & an orchestral version of the title track (sort of à la _oxbow lakes_). every passing day confirms that there is really no one who makes music like oeuf korreckt.

037: eucci >>
it seems like there's never a dead time in eucci's release schedule, with new mp3s floating around all the time on his various web sites (& especially the mighty euc.cx). following _at the jenifer st. western_ & the _autumn special_ (all precious virtual collectibles), eucci is now releasing another automnal album. proof (if needed be) that it is possible to convey recognizable human longing through even the most arcane minimalist constructions, Pershing Square [037] presents you, once again, with the best of both worlds: every sound is crafted with every possible care, & every track is jam-packed with breathtaking dramatic content. now ask yourself: is _this_ what i'm getting from the leading brand?

no shop >> gotta say it: the new _tomas jirku_, _sequins_ (force inc.) is out & should be hitting your favorite record shop soon, if it hasn't already. you'll recognize it instantly when you see it, as it looks pretty obnoxious. additionally, new albums by _viratone ballad_, _james schidlowsky_ & newcomer _books on tape_ are all available from the no shop page. some of them you can buy with a credit card, some of them you have to contact the artist directly, but in each case you do get a fine piece of plastic you wouldn't get otherwise. do i hear: nice gift idea? evil, evil seasons marketing.

elasticlego >> a new no type member whose debut album should appear on these premises soon, _elasticlego_ is already posting various unreleased mp3 tracks on the web, first with the _disconnected thoughts_ ep on the esteemed .tiln, & now with a new collection on his own web site called abstatic. those in san francisco will also have the chance to catch elasticlego on a live set on december 9th at 483 guerrero. in other words: a lot is going on, isn't it.

zammuto >> the _zammuto_ remix album has been completed & should be released on no type two months from now. a "lost" gem from the critically lauded but very limited _solutiore of stareau_ triple cdr set (a common fixture of many a 1999 top-of-year-list), the _full martyr status_ track here gets its full release treatment with prime reworkings from _diablatomica_, _matrix assimilation_, _philémon_, _833-45_, _eucci_, _atomes lourds_ & _camp_; a subtle mixture of wit, irreverence, & purpose. the mastering has just been finished, the rest is just waiting patiently. in the meantime, you can learn more about zammuto at apartmentb.

politics >> headfirst into a brave(?) new(?) world on the north american continent where even after 2 major elections (u.s. & canadian) things remain just the same if not a tad more obvious, is there a point to no type? after all, we've been asked for a "business plan". we've been interviewed regarding how exactly we manage to financially sustain this project (personal initiative, ring a bell?) however, on the other end of the media spectrum (the one that usually doesn't tell you what clothes you should wear), we've gone from being called a "label" (with quotes) to now just label (albeit of the online sort, but without quotes). i guess that says where our friends are; good thing, they're the most civilized. anyway, sorry for the late advice, but next time you must vote, cast it for whoever's the minority. the hell with those hegemonic political behemoths turning the act of government administration into something of a wrestling match. small parties are good. they don't steal votes, they rightly gain them as the result of increasing cynicism & irresponsibility from their more popular adversaries. when nobody cares, someone's got to do the god damn cleaning job. it's pretty stupid to vote for the guy who'll accelerate our march towards whatever evil we're crashing into already anyway. so vote green. vote imagination. vote marijuana. anything. don't just be ordinary.

upcoming >> this news bit wouldn't be the same if it didn't say something about the next update, which will consist of three veterans who are all (coincidentally) at their third no type release. _833-45_ continues his exploration of outerworldly sounds through his latest album, _sunspot_ [040]. _thin_, a long time favorite, is returning with _moody hat_ [039]. as for _stackoverflow_, he doesn't have access to internet (something about being busy smoking peyotl with hopi indians...), but he did manage to send us a minidisc which went by the name _rubitcow_ [038]. come next time & watch the mystery unfold. or probably get even more vague.

thought >> no type: we are poor starving artists, but at least we've got computers.
