News2002April

it’s all in the way you do it

April 25, 2002

all right, i hear you there. is there any end, you wonder, to the lapses out of existence experienced by yours truly in typing down these few lines of explanation as to what the newest & boldest no type releases are all about, at the risk of constituting a monstruous backlog of unreleased stuff which haunts me to this day? what, for a deity's sake, is taking so much time?!

not only that, but the present update only features two new releases, as opposed to three. this, i must say, is entirely my fault, as the third release is my own. the music is all there & ready to go, i just haven't had the time to sit down & do the HTML & artwork (which should be more complex than usual.) however, rather than apologize endlessly, i figured i should stop waiting & release the following albums which are threatening enough on their own.

& if you're around montréal, stay alert for the great no type launch, april 27th, casa del popolo (more details below as we mention the new magali CD.)

066 || Hamburglers || Happy Meal

the product of your fertile imagination, we wouldn't want to be caught implicating that the Hamburglers exist in some manner fathomable to the bulk of humankind. if they exist, it's not our fault. they just hacked into our website & made me type out this complete nonsense. rumor would have it that they found MP3s of a motivational campaign by a well-known restaurant chain dating from 1979. this campaign was directed at employees who undoubtedly enjoyed the variety of ways in which they were being brainwashed by the mother corporation. certainly if the so-called hamburglers did in fact remix this material to make various pieces of highly disturbing electronic music, it would be in firm violation of all existing copyright & trademark laws, particularly the more recent sort. which is why we protest in advance: the thing doesn't exist, the whole matter is a setup, why did you click on it if you knew it was illegal, etc. oh, & hint: those who liked an album called _sequins_ would do well to download the "rivers of disco" remix.

067 || Sluts on Tape || Eden Ostrich Farm

eryk salvaggio (Infoslut) & todd drootin (Books on Tape) have undertaken a collaboration together under the name Sluts on Tape. everybody knows eryk as the net.art provocateur & assembler of beats & items of variable poignancy into songs that he is. his latest no type album, The Revolution Against Rotten Days, is, i must assure you, very good. todd is no less notorious & has released various songs on his subverseco website & elsewhere. he is just returning from the studio where he recorded his debut CD, appropriately called "throw down your laptops" as it does not in fact feature any laptops (it does however feature various LA musicians, as who could shun an opportunity to play with the books?) the two heavyweights of rhythm have known each other for a little while (in fact, it's eryk who got todd to join no type) but they had never formally collaborated before, except for remixes & that sort of thing. modifying & reusing each other's material to any suitable extent, these two chaps create a hybrid out of their own musical personalities. it's jumpy, absurd & fun. it's called Eden Ostrich Farm. get it.

IMNT 0203 || Magali Babin || Chemin de fer

the first no type CD following our double compilation (which is getting some rather positive reviews so far) is by montréal sound artist Magali Babin. this is actually her first appearance on no type, though we have known her for over a year now, as she often plays with the likes of James Schidlowsky, crys cole or alexandre st-onge. magali has been exploring the realms of sound for 10 years now, so she's no rookie. her favoured materials include metal objects, VCRs, guitars & radios... & of course, effect pedals. her first CD, Chemin de fer is at once very delicate & very in your face, if you will. the metal is all there, in the sounds themselves surely, but also in the way things are laid upon one another. magali really goes at the heart of the metallic objects she plays of (or with). we will be launching her CD this saturday, april 27, at the usual casa del popolo in montréal. on that occasion she'll be bringing sound toys for children to play with. oy! she's a character, that magali! at any rate, you can order the CD through this link which will also give you more details that you might have even asked for. it's very good.

ERYK SALVAGGIO OPENS A MUSEUM |

turning trivial objects of daily life into something to be preserved is the official mission behind the eryk salvaggio museum of modern living, which has opened recently & is now showing its second exhibit, "lamination ritual", ken montgomery's collection of found objects. modest & celebratory, this museum is a place of respect, perhaps even meditation, in front of fragments put so totally out of context that they acquire a new role, a new erm, aura, or something. we're very happy to recommend that you make it a destination.

K. M. KREBS GOES WEST (no wait, he was already west) |

it's no longer a secret, k. m. krebs of the 833-45 moniker is now behind a new endeavour, in the form of... ah, can you guess it? yes, an online label! kevin has thus today with great fanfare announced the launch of nishi, a site hosted by & affiliated to no type. three releases are available for your perusal & enjoyment: you may find a duo called foer (a long-happening duo of krebs & steven brekelmans) with their online debut Landlines, & a new recording from kevin himself, Live at Multiplex 11 (this one can be found in our live section...) also look out for a full-length album by a vancouver act called fasp. s'all good, dahlink.

V. V. LEFT A NOTE... |

V. V. is one of the rising stars of the no type crew, with his various releases (see his throat label to catch some of them) gaining more notice each time from various publications with obvious taste. this is all the more of a feat considering his music is quite forbidding at times; yet, it's also extremely rewarding & i should say all the praise is throughly deserved. v. v. is finally delivering a full-length CD, Note, with a small US label called crank satori. he's also touring across the US along with vertonen. check your local listings.

CLAUDIA BONARELLI ON KOMPLOTT |

swedish glitch superstar Claudia Bonarelli gets a lot of thumbs up from our friends in the new music digerati for her stellar Boredom is Counterrevolutionary release. now, not only will she release a 12" with no type later this summer, she has also a new CD to be released this year on the swedish label mitek. now, in the meantime, there is some new music from claudia to be downloaded at the komplott website. it's part of their "starfield simulation" series & consists in 6 wildly experimental pieces. & isn't that making your life a whole lot better?

IT'S CALLED SLAPART |

n.kra, who has been seen (or heard) on the compilation The Freest of Radicals, & who is poised to release 2 albums on no type (one of which is a collaboration with eM, no less!), has started his own online label: slapart. this entity will in fact produce recordings of all sizes & kinds, including video & PDF! one of the first releases, expectably, is by n.kra himself. it consists of ten miniature reworkings of johnny cash's song "folsom prison blues". there's also more to be found by v.stevenson, eM & more!

IDMONSTER IS AT IT IT AGAIN |

Idmonster is continuing his beautifully crafted pieces of guitars & weirdness. he has just posted a new track on monotonik. if you liked his previous album The then you wouldn't want to miss this one. we've heard good things about his track on the compilation, too...

NEW ON SUBVERSECO |

from now on the no type mailout will be used to propagate news from subverseco, as well as other labels closely linked to no type. however, we wouldn't want you to miss the latest subverseco update, with many seriously demented items from the usual cast of Books on Tape & friends. we suggest that you check out Science Books Remix Class, a collaboration with Headphone Science where they remix their friends hellothisisalex, tangible, ashland, consafos, chaki & dewey decimator. todd is also involved in two other releases, one called Collected Recordings by box social & another called Idoltery by the art ensemble of subverseco (you heard right.) we should also mention that there's a new album by none other than zug island on the site. tell him no type told you to listen to his music.

SO WHAT BE UP ANYHOW? |

you have a right to be pissed. this update has taken forever & it doesn't even have everything it was supposed to. there are plenty of releases in the backlog & nobody can hear them, which is quite silly if you ask me.

however, while this hiatus was going on, a lot has been happening on the manufacturing side of things... first, there are now 3 new CDs to our catalogue. there is the aforementioned album by Magali Babin, but coming up in june are brand shiny new CDs by morceaux_de_machines & Oeuf Korreckt. we're all very excited about this, but then comes the dire facts of life: we have to sell those puppies to a sentient public! oh wait, what public am i talking about? could it be you? could it?

well, if you enjoy the no type releases, if you dig the bunch of laid back geniuses that people our little virtual territory, you will most likely be happy to know that we're almost done building our initial distribution network. canadians can presently order no type CDs through our distributor, fusion3. folks in europe will be able to do the same thing through métamkine shortly. in the USA, you can now order no type CDs through rioux's.

& what if you just want to download? well, be my guest & download to your heart's content, & don't feel any sort of shame about it.

oh well... now, that's all pretty & all but it doesn't solve our backlog problem. this is getting so serious that i've temporarily stopped accepting any new people in no type a little while ago. hopefully the doors will reopen in a near future. yikes. if i had known, when i started this, what it would be like now... ah, who am i kidding, i'm quite happy of how it's turning out & i hope that no type will prove to be a place for music enthusiasts to seek the music they will love.

SOME LIVE ACTION |

some new live bootlegs have been added! Chris Degiere _live @ ABCO waterproofing_ (recorded on the california launch of the no type compilation) & Dick Richards _live at the first avenue club VIP room_ (a 60-minute ride into sexy minimal house madness.) there is more to come!

NEXT UPDATE |

on the next update, hopefully _camp socialiste_ will be ready for release. & just to be nice, we'll be releasing the next 3 albums along with it. & it's looking to be very interesting. first off, we meet up Dick Richards again, this time under his ramon llull guise, demonstrating some abstract minimal ambience quite unlike his recent work on raum...musik & below. (we hope to get him to release his old school dub tracks one day, too.) next up is Octopus Inc, & it's an immense joy to have this veteran of the kracfive quarters around for a fantastic, fantastic downtempo (as well as highly quirky) release. this will be rounded up by James Schidlowsky in a welcome return, who will take care of volume 3 of the ever expanding sine fiction series. having said that, i will now return to read this krazy kat book, my mind now clear of any remorse for "not doing anything". ahhh, until next time, that is. (sigh.)
