next exit: california

January 21, 2002

good golly! a month & a few days, & we're back! & that's counting the holidays seasons! you guys can't say we're slacking, can you? okay, you still can.

anyway, the slacking is on purpose this month as we welcome a glorious new year under the warm california sun, with three new albums from notypers operating within the borders of the state with the most energy problems in the USA! of course, this should not be construed to mean they are boring & flat-sounding, in fact it should be the other way around...

063 || V. V. || Touch Tone

ven voisey, or V. V. for short, is not someone who takes sound lightly. much to the contrary, as his discography is getting to serious lengths & we are only beginning to notice his presence. running his own throat label & web site, he recently released a mini-CD which earned him some critical praise. Touch Tone is a study in telephone sounds in two parts. the "internal" piece is made out of telephone tonalities, hums & clicks, whereas the "external" piece uses sounds from the telephone object itself. delicate & thorough.

064 || Chris Degiere || Automatos

Chris Degiere has been making electronic music for a few years now, but our paths have somehow only recently crossed. why, it's never too late, especially for something this ripe for your ears. mr. degiere works with generative musics & compositional indeterminancy to create strange flows of sound. sound cold & lifeless? we don't think so, & it seems we're not alone, as he has just recently played at the six string object microguitar festival, & signed for a 10" release with emanate records. for his new project Automatos, chris plays with the sounds of ambient music, but the result is as unsettling & abstract as you can expect.

065 || Headphone Science || Number 65

dustin craig has released one lovely album on no type as Elasticlego which i described as "narrative ambient". recently though, he has gotten back into beats, & not just a little bit. with Headphone Science, dustin reveals admirable production skills & a knack for appealing, solid songs you are likely to go back to repeatedly. Number 65 is nothing short of stunning on many aspects, down to the sharp & complex rhythms sometimes bordering on drum n bass, but usually in an unnamed area somewhere inbetween. what can i say. it sounds good.

A LITTLE BIT OF COMPILATION NEWS |

a lot of people are asking us when they will see our new compilation, The Freest of Radicals, in their local record shops. well, we have just now finished on writing the promotional material & we're now looking for distributors.

if you have a credit card, you can however buy yourself a copy through electrocd. otherwise, please be a little patient! it's on its way, we promise! we have received a lot of positive comments on the compilation, so we can only expect it will be a hit in your heart.

EUCCI REBUILDING |

there is another small & beautiful release from our favorite jeffrey shell, aka Eucci. it's available on his website. as with other recent eucci work, this one incorporates material from old audio ELW sessions with cybele roland, hence the title.

NEW DICK RICHARDS 12" OUT |

another new release has just come out, it's the _cratif_ 12" by Dick Richards! the first item on the list of things richard will release on the illustrious raum...musik label, this takes 2 tracks from his previous no type release, plus 2 new tracks. this will shake your booty all right.

NEW BOOKS ON TAPE CDR (AGAIN!) |

can't wait for the new Books on Tape CD (_throw down your laptops_, to be released in december 2002 by california label deathbomb arc)? then you may hunt down todd's inbetween release, a CDR called _mad cow variations_, which just came out on slide the needle, another california label. this surprise album features remixes of books' track _bossy cow_ by notypers such as Dick Richards, Chris Degiere & Headphone Science, not to mention chaki, satellite grooves, & who knows what else!

NO TYPE AT LE NAVIRE "NIGHT" |

thanks to an impromptu meeting with hélène prévost, host & producer of the radio show le navire «night», has invited A_dontigny & myself for a no type special on january 27, 2002. if this show is not broadcasted in your area, you can even tune in live at the radio-canada.ca site (don't forget: eastern time!). we'll be talking about everything from the new state of experimental music to the new diplomacy of sound.

NEXT UPDATE |

the next update may be seen as a move to bite the corporate hand that feeds us, but it's really just more revolutionary music for your head. first off is a project long kept secret by a mysterious group called the Hamburglers, & involving snippets from a '70s ad campaign everybody most likely forgot. this will be followed by the no type debut of Sluts on Tape which is an amazing side project from 2 artists who only have side projects. their album is called _eden ostrich farm_. next up is the strange & somewhat interactive _Camp socialiste_ experience which we hope you will replicate in your own homes & basements. until then, have a good one.
