August 14, 2001
this no type update follows a good two weeks of infernal heat here in montréal, yet another proof if needed be of an invisible ecological disaster currently at play. excessive heat is pernicious; it makes our psychology different, sometimes more belliquous, sometimes more amorphic. it also makes us want to go outside more, ensuingly ditching the computer.
but then, this is the city of constantly varying weather, so we're somehow used to it by now. anyway, now that august has arrived & that north american capitalist stores are eagerly preparing the "back to school" season, we are proud to counter their efforts towards a more globally productive tomorrow with new albums from 3 culturally independent identities. (oh, & a new website redesign, too, but more on that later.)
054 || IDMONSTER || The
this british musician has recently begun to make waves under his "idmonster" &
"pendle" monikers, with three releases on monotonik, & he has even been approached
by neo-ouija label boss lee norris for an upcoming compilation slot. for a start,
that's certainly not bad. idmonster's no type debut, The, is at once sharp & laid-back, a sweet mixture of
styles (electronic or not) dipped into DSP sauce for good measure. of course, idmonster
is not new to working with diverging styles & idioms; just recently, he was busy
composing documentary film music for topics as varied as torture, gay sex & child
birth! idmonster is where musicianship meets curiosity, & there's very little doubt
you'll hear more from him in the near future.
055 || INFOSLUT || The Revolution
Against Rotten Days
no type is proud to bear witness to eryk salvaggio's most accomplished work to date...
for the fifth time! a composer who has consistently & relentlessly bettered &
refined his music, ever since his beginnings as Matrix Assimilation, eryk is now being known
solely as Infoslut, but don't
worry, his usual wit & griffe are both present in more than generous quantities on
this new release, & so are his hard-hitting beats & eloquently caustic
melodies. all of this & more can be found in The Revolution Against Rotten Days & its companion CDR
release _from now on i demand to be swept off of my feet_. listen to infoslut, &
you too will say "down with the rotten days!"
056 || ILLUSION OF SAFETY || Graintext
illusion of safety is a pionneering act of experimental ambience, spareheaded by dan
burke since 1983, who released 15 CDs in the process. as IOS is acknowledged as a major
influence by some no type members themselves, you can say it came as a surprise when
dan himself contacted us in order to release a new, unpublished work, Graintext. for this new, 6-part piece, dan burke
doesn't let his maturity get in the way of spontaneity & research, as he continues
to push the IOS sound towards new grounds, & certainly not the most obvious ones.
we are thus treated to a symphony of concrète matter where every sound possibility is
considered. each piece offers something new to those who will take the time to listen.
this is vintage material.
SUBVERSECO: A LOT OF BOOKS ON TAPE & A LITTLE BIT OF KALX |
there's never enough free music anywhere. the ever-involved todd drootin (Books on Tape himself) has put together a
new label for crazy online music in the electronic vein: subverseco. not only that,
he's managed to release 7 new albums under this label! two of them were announced in
our latest update, but there is more! for one, perhaps prefiguring the upcoming
Kalx no type release (see below), is
seymour sprout's album _syrup_, which promises "highly evolved dementia". & believe
it or not, there is also yet another books on tape album! it is called _test pressing_
& will also serve as a source for the upcoming books on tape remix EP... of course,
that's not all, other releases by zug island, abradere & the superlatives are also
present & recommended.
if i may, i shall also tell you a little about rollerderby superstar, the webzine todd has started & released 4 issues of (the 5th one is on the way & todd always likes to receive submissions!) the last 2 issues have featured compilations which included some unreleased no type-related tracks as well as plenty of quite nice unrelated ones too. check it out!
INFOSLUT DESTROYS THE MIT |
okay, not _exactly_ but almost. the story goes as follows: eryk was asked to perform at
an event for electronic music at the MIT, but 3 days before the gig, it turned out he
wasn't enough of an "improviser" to perform! perhaps they thought it to be wrong for an
electronic musician to just sit in front of his computer doing nothing when all these
people paid so much money to get in? eryk says the true reason involves bongos &
mic feedback, so we can only ponder the true horror behind this all.
CAMP DOES FORCE INC.
|
there has been some secret camp activity following the Féministe experience, & it is now available for all to
peruse at the famed fällt site. these 2 tracks are made out of snippets from the force
inc. extended catalogue (listed on the site for your convenience), & are intended
to sound both as a homage & a critique of the click genre. as with other items in
the fodder collection, this release comes with artwork that you can print, & use as
an actual CD cover!

NEXT UPDATE |
you waited for it patiently, here it is finally. GI Joe Killaz is a trio of plastic figurines who rap
about killing a group of other plastic figurines over lo-fi beats. their debut no type
single is called _takin' over tha world_ [057]. next up is the second edition of the
sine fiction series, this time featuring Philémon who created a soundtrack to george orwell's
classic novel _nineteen eighty four_ [058]. & as if that wasn't enough, no type
cheers for lifeproxy, which is none other than, yes, you guessed right, Kalx, who returns for the first time since _0.948_
[006, deleted]. there is no end in sight to the madness.
