more horror

October 19, 2001

sometimes you make up words to pretend something is happening, & sometimes you're wordless as something happens.

so to make a long story short: we have turned three on october 1st. our compilation CD is finally going to come out (in december), & more awesome than ever, in the form of a double album!

there is a lot to mention so i'll go directly to the whatwhat, if you don't mind.

057 || GI JOE KILLAZ || Takin’ Over Tha World

this hard-hittin' trio is made of three plastic figurines: MC destro, DJ cobra commander & the baroness. while they're not busy spreading villainery in the name of evil, they also make rap music! adding insult to injury, their music is recorded on dubious devices & they spend most of the lyrics of Takin’ Over Tha World [057] arguing with each other. but still, Tomas Jirku insists that we must release it. we'll leave it to lawyers for the last word on the aesthetic. meanwhile, here's a potent reminder as to why violence is bad for you.

058 || SINE FICTION || Sine Fiction vol.II) Nineteen Eighty Four

back in 1948, a man named george orwell devised a bulky & rather painful novel, which he called "1984" though he would be quick to tell you the whole thing was really about his own era. certainly he had already witnessed the result of increased surveillance & the loss of personal freedoms. still, he also foresaw the brute force surveillance of the late USSR & the monopolization of communication & institutionalized belligerence found in our own (western) societies. as a second volume to our ongoing sine fiction series (see Sine Fiction vol.I) We [034]), napalm jazz's diligent saxophonist Philémon (who plays regularly with sam shalabi these days...) presents a series of 3 digital compositions based on the classic novel, nineteen eighty four.

059 || PROXYLIFE || Vide EP

& while we're mentioning the thought police, here's our latest cure: irony & the most beautiful nonsense. proxylife is a project of Kalx (recently seen on subverseco & remarked on the zenapolae CD compilation) which brings about all sorts of abstracted feelings & sounds to make your ears a happy place. the Vide EP [059] is a twisted, complicatedly naive & most definitely foreign addition to the kalx corpus which should rejoice all of you out there. this is the future we are proposing.

DOESN'T ELASTICLEGO SPELL AS "HEADPHONE SCIENCE"? |

try as we might, no type can't be releasing all the good free music on the web (yes, a hard fact we must all come to terms with here.) that's why people like dustin craig (Elasticlego) start their own online labels! delete:thought had begun quietly some time ago, & it is now turning into a nice little label & online repository for quality music (à la tiln), with 3 releases under its belt & a few more mp3s scattered here & there on the site.

what more, you may even find some new material from dustin craig himself in the form of headphone science, dustin's moniker for rhythm-oriented material, & _the hanover EP_ offered for downloading purposes. also featured is an album by a promising newcomer named yardsale. you can't keep up, can you? neither can i, so do yourself a favor, & plunder freely!

there's also a new headphone science album on subverseco, as alluded to below.

YOU WON'T HEAR ABOUT BOOKS ON TAPE FOR SOME TIME... |

that's how life goes. todd drootin's "real life" (remember?) calls upon him for a little while, & as a result, he won't be releasing a new album every other week anymore.

of course, in the same breath as he announces this terrible news, todd was quick to point us to his amazing subverseco site, where he posted 2 new albums, _foundations reflected_ by the aforementioned headphone science & _generalities_ by dewey decimator (who shares some neural connections with todd himself.)

not only that, todd also directs you to his lively webzine, rollerderby superstar, which just released its fifth issue with exclusive MP3s from california residents, among whom headphone science (him again!), V. V. (soon to appear on these premises) & Books on Tape himself, with a track whose title is worth connection time alone: _don't call me boo boo, i'm the fucking prince of darkness_. & there's some more stuff courtesy of the soundmangle crew. not to mention some comic strips from none other than eryk salvaggio of Infoslut fame, & the usual rants & raves.

& then just as you want to say something, you also get a pretty CD-R entitled _test pressure_, which contains 11 tracks of pure math breaks. so hey todd, maybe this whole "hiatus" thing is a blessing, we weren't even done listening to the OLDER stuff yet!

EUCCI, POST-ERR(I)OR |

eucci continues to happen in various places, most recently live at earational. he has recorded the entire piece, entitled _magnificient ass_, & it is now available on his website, applause included. it's quite a heavy piece, digital & klangy in a magistral way.

FRANCIS DHOMONT AS A SOUND PUZZLE |

born in france in 1928, now composing & teaching electroacoustic music in montréal, francis dhomont is something of a legend in his own right. one of the early experimenters of musique concrète in the 1950s, he has worked with the famous french experimental studio INA-GRM & produced a few masterpieces of the genre, such as _sous le regard d'un soleil noir_ & many others.

now, to celebrate dhomont's 75th anniversary, which will coincide with the launch of an empreintes digitales CD, no type is proud to announce an upcoming remix project, involving francis dhomont's corpus as source material. this project was inspired by neil wiernik & is coordinated by a_dontigny. several participants have already confirmed that they would contribute a piece. yeah, yeah, the usual suspects, & some others too!

THE WORLD OWES YOU AN APOLOGY |

we at no type would like to express our profound grief to the friends & families of innocents killed, injured, molested or imprisoned in the past (say) 500 years directly or indirectly as the result of economic motives, religious extremism, racism, sexism, or foreign policies.

we wish that this goes without saying in the future.

FILE UNDER: IMPROVISATIONAL ARCHITECTURE |

in a continued effort to expand the breadth of our collective futility, & as had been hinted at in the previous installment of our ever-involved newsletter, no type has gone through yet another "sharp redesign". the colors & general layout remained similar, but the architecture has been drastically improved, thanks to a (not yet publically available) technology called litk, which is an idiosyncratic markup language used to cut templates & databases in pieces & turn them into web sites, & which most developers will probably hate because it's the furthest thing from php3.

to give you a potent example of the sort of insanity this language allows, we now introduce a very interesting (okay, to a point) page: the file under page is basically what it alludes to, a complete listing of all our releases, sorted by "file under". yes, it's really the sort of extraordinarily pointless tool you're all craving for. of course, there may actually be a use for it, for example if you're new to no type & you want to browse around by genre.

LIVE EVENTS |

another thing we are trying to improve is no type's capacity to announce live events as they should. to that end, we will now send live announcements in separate emails on our mailout. the announcements might also return to the web site as soon as i get around to putting it together. so, if you want to stay informed, just subscribe to our mailout, you punk!

NEXT UPDATE |

so how many more months before the next update? hopefully not too many! in fact, we will try to make it faster. i mean i will try. i think i use we too liberally. :) so... next update will see the no type debut of My Amazing Robot, eryk salvaggio's "ska" band & their past 15 years of existence, Kanito's second installment of his unorthodox _duos, itself numbered 3 & taking place at a conference, & Claudia Bonarelli's long-awaited debut, a funky feast of total swedish chick click. apart from that, nothing normal in sight.
