of course — nobody serious uses those warez. but when david turgeon (isn’t it haadler? what’s his name again?) says his musical instrument of choice is a program called rebirth rb-338, which emulates the classic sounds of the roland 303 & 808, he means it.

period three’s moving systems is like a bare-bones power trio: two 303’s for the harmony, & a 808 for the beats. or is it the other way around? who knows. as for the exact music genre, your pick is as good as anyone’s; you’ll find hints of noise, ambient, lo-fi indie rock, idm, hell, even post-rock (imagine that!). it’s like autechre playing with plastikman’s gear & trying to cover bad moon rising while on special-k, constantly pushing the wrong buttons, & you bet that delay knob must be stuck at 10 because it just won’t mellow down.

New (2001) liner notes

the second period three album (following a rare 1997 modpack titled “blasphematory transmittal”), moving systems was the culmination of three 90-minute cassette worth of recordings, most of which were put together using the first version of rebirth (which did not include a 909 or a PCF box as the later version would) as the sole instrumentation.

of these 3 tapes, only 8 songs were selected for inclusion on the album, & later the song “main street arcade” was removed from the tracklisting as it didn’t seem fit the rest of the album well. now i’m putting it back there for the sake of god knows what.

since the compositions didn’t use any stereo effects, i decided to encode the files as mono. later on i would find out that stereo would have fared better. fortunately i still have the tapes, so one day i’ll just re-record the whole thing to disk & do a better job, perhaps with a slightly different track listing. i’m also contemplating putting everything together completely differently & even reprocessing the original files, but don’t quote me on that yet.

released at the end of 1998, moving systems was the fourth release on the no type label, & my first properly released solo album.

interestingly (perhaps), the 6001 catalogue number was originally assigned to another project of mine entitled “celebrity kills”. this project was completed but never released, as moving systems seemed like a more appropriate thing to release at the time. (still does. “celebrity kills” has its moments but otherwise it’s just painful to listen to.)

actually, there is another, rebirth-based, full-length album of mine which has never seen a legitimate release. an advertisement in grooves #2 announced it as being titled “the new circuitry of sound” with catalogue number 6014. it is now titled “adhesive” & i’m unsure what to do with it.
