Constantine Katsiris embarked on his mission to explore the electronic arts in the early 1990s, when he received his first computer as a young middle school student. Through his discoveryof the local BBS scene he was exposed to ansi/ascii art and tracker modules, and obsessively educated himself as to the techniques and processes of these mediums.
As a teenager drawing ansi/ascii logos gave way to graffiti art, and turntables and synthesizers were integrated to accompany his computer in the music creation process. During that time he chose the alias Khanfucius and began to DJ a selection of abstract beats and ambient soundscapes in local nightclubs, raves and other events. His active involvement in the local underground scene spawned two major projects; the event production company Uninhibited Sound System with other DJ peers and the electronic improvisation ensemble, Mandelbrot Set. Both projects enjoyed considerable success over the following years as they performed and organized shows with other electronic acts from around the world.
In need of a change of surroundings and pace of
life, Constantine decided to moveto Ireland in 1999 to travel and record
various projects with friends Amanda Schurman and Ruairi Matthews. Prior
to leaving Saskatoon, he compiled his first solo album, The Phuzzillogikal
Basement Tapes, which was a collection of melodic ambient and downtempo
breakbeat tracks that received goodreviews at home and abroad. One such
review lead to contact with Keith Downey,a radio DJ in Dublin who has
gone on to establish Psychonavigation Records and release works by Constantine
and his Canadian associates in the Panospria collective.
They returned to Canada after many months on hiatus, and Constantine was
introduced to Jon Vaughn through their friend
Carrie Gates. He sites this influential
meeting as a major turning point, as Jon became primary collaborator on
many of the projects, concepts and experiments that were to follow. Constantine
and Amanda departed Saskatoon in 2001 to study and enjoy life in Montreal.
Since then his focus has been fixed on his experimental music and sound-art
project, Scant Intone.
Once in Montreal, Constantine and Amanda were joined by more prairie expatriates including Paul Keeley and the Panospria net-label was launched to disseminate their works. He was recently invited to be a core member in the Phoniq collective, whose projects include hosting monthly deep listening events and starting a national mailing list for electronic music. Upcoming solo and collaborative projects include works for various labels and audio-art installations.
